Help Drive Change During National Vegetarian Week 2023

Taking place between Monday 15 and Sunday 21 May 2023, this year’s National Vegetarian Week has a clear focus on the climate crisis, highlighting how plant-based food has a much lower carbon footprint and vegetarian diets can make a real difference to the planet.

The very first National Vegetarian Week ran in 1992, while last year’s campaign saw plenty of celebrity support and record-breaking attempts. Over 70,000 people were inspired to switch to veggie and plant-based dishes, saving over 100 tons of carbon.

“For 2023 we want to reach out to even more people,” explained Richard McIlwain, Chief Executive of the Vegetarian Society.

“By joining the many thousands of people signing up for the week, we aim to demonstrate how, together, individual efforts can lead to real and meaningful change.”

Residents of Leicester have the perfect opportunity to take part this year, with Leicester Market home to a massive variety of fantastic vegetable sellers in the outdoor market, all offering top-quality produce at super-low prices.

Why not check out the recipe ideas on the official National Vegetarian Week website for some meal inspiration, and write up your shopping list before your visit. Whether it’s potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, broccoli or peppers you’re after, you’ll be spoilt for choice when strolling through our famous outdoor market.

With fantastic food and friendly faces, make sure to check out Vicki’s Fruits, Christine’s Worldly Foods, Teresa’s Salads and Mr Garcia on the market stalls.
