Celebrate International Falafel Day with Leicester Market

Monday 12 June will mark International Falafel Day 2023, which provides us with the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on a much-loved Leicester Market trader: Just Falafel.

A traditional middle Eastern dish, falafel originates from Egypt and is now enjoyed all around the world as a popular vegetarian option.

This tasty treat is made up of ground-up fava beans, chickpeas, chia seeds, onions and garlic, as well as a list of fresh herbs and spices, and is fried until golden-brown.

Once served, falafel is light yet filling, providing the perfect snack or lunch option with bursts of flavour throughout, while being naturally gluten-free and full of protein.

“We started in a different unit and moved over here so we can serve more people,” explained Othmane Ghautom of Just Falafel, who having begun trading in 2016 outside the Food Hall, moved to a special café unit at Leicester Market.

“A wide nationality of people visit and that is great; English people, Arabic, it is fantastic,” Othmane continued.

“They are vegan so a lot of people enjoy them. We always make them fresh, too.”

The falafel wraps at Just Falafel are a true crowd-pleaser, while hummus, fries or salad can join the party as perfect side accompaniments.

They also serve a wide range of lamb and chicken wraps that can be washed down with some of the freshest juices you’re likely to find in the city centre.

Why not mark International Falafel Day 2023 with a trip to Leicester Market? Just Falafel are open Monday through to Saturday between 9:30am-6pm.
