Apple Day is an annual celebration of apples and orchards, this year held on Saturday 21st October 2023.
Here at Leicester Market, there are a variety of apples available from our Outdoor Market, where you’ll see plenty of friendly faces and excellent fruit and veg produce at Vicki’s Fruits, Christine’s Worldly Foods, Teresa’s Salads and Mr Garcia and more (open Monday-Saturday 8am-5pm).
Initiated by Common Ground on October 21, 1990 during a gathering in London’s Covent Garden, Apple Day has been observed ever since. By the year 2000, more than 600 events were held in the UK to commemorate the day. According to Common Ground, the day serves as a means to celebrate, show how important diversity and richness are to a community, and show how you can make changes where you live. The apple has been utilised by Common Ground as a representation of the genetic, cultural, and physical variety we must preserve. They believe that by associating certain apples with their geographical origin, orchards would be acknowledged for their contribution to local individuality, especially the great range of wildlife.
