Trader Spotlight – Verity’s Market CaféJanuary 8, 2015
Location: Opposite the Food Hall
Bacon, crumpets and Yorkshire tea; what more could shoppers and traders at Leicester Market ask for?
Following the grand opening of ‘Verity’s Market Café’ in November’s Winter Food Festival, we caught up with Verity herself to find out why she decided to set up the café and what she has on offer to satisfy your taste buds…
What made you decide to set up your café at Leicester Market?
I opened at the Winter Food Festival, which was fantastic with a great atmosphere. I wanted to try something new. Before opening the café, I used to help my partner on his stall, selling electrical items, so this is a big change; however, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I decided now was finally the time to do it so here I am in the freezing cold with my own market café…and I love it!
What attracted you to Leicester Market?
I am from Leicester and have lived here all my life. It’s always been part of my life and somewhere I’ve been to. I know people that work here, which is nice and the market is a big part of Leicester. It’s always busy and there’s always something going on. It’s a great atmosphere to work in.
What are your most popular items?
Bacon! Everyone loves a good bacon sandwich! In a week I have got through 90lbs worth of bacon. I’m feeding the whole market now, which is fantastic. This is what I set out to do and I have succeeded in that. I have a lot of friends round here. All the traders have been very supportive and I haven’t had one bad comment.
Your location is great; do you get a lot of passing trade as well as from traders on the market?
It is a great location, people are constantly walking by. The trouble is because its winter at the moment no one wants to come and sit outside because it’s cold, which I don’t blame them! It will be brilliant in the summer though.
What are your hopes for the future?
I would love it to grow and be massive! It’s my own little business, it’s all mine and I would like to do as much with is it as I can.
What do you think makes it unique from other cafés around here?
I use all locally sourced products. All my bacon and sausages are from Country Fayre, my tomatoes and mushrooms are all fresh from the food side round here. We all support one another and one of my main aims is to feed the traders.
What is your favourite product?
Definitely crumpets! This also makes my café unique too. I sell out of crumpets without a doubt in an hour. As soon as they were discovered on the menu, word travels fast round here! Nowhere else sells crumpets, so they sell out quickly. I also serve Yorkshire tea with them, which nowhere else has. It’s expensive, but it is worth it for sure. I just like the fact that I am selling everything from around me and it’s something I have always wanted to do, which is a great feeling. It’s definitely a big change for me, but it is fantastic.
Have you got a message to shoppers coming to visit Leicester Market and your café?
Come down, give it a go…there is something for everybody. Come and have a cup of tea and a chat!
Verity’s Café is open Monday through to Saturday from 7:00am-4:00pm
