Trader Spotlight – Sita Vig

November 8, 2013

Location: Unit 29

One of Leicester Market’s long-serving traders, Sita Vig is providing shoppers in Leicester with something not widely available on the city’s high street.

We spoke to Sita to find out more about her stall and why she loves trading on a daily basis…

How long have you been trading at Leicester Market and how did the stall start up?
I’ve been here for 26 years; I’ve stuck it out that long! I took it over from my family, as it was run by my parents. They retired and the stall had always been in my blood, as I used to help them out after I finished school as a kid. In many ways, it was second nature to take it over.

Many traders at Leicester Market have taken over stalls from family members. It’s quite special isn’t it?
I think it’s a massive part of the Market’s character. It’s nice to be able to go back in your history and say with pride that the stall has been in existence for so many years.

What are your most popular products?
I stock a lot of products that are specifically for the older woman, and many customers tell me that they like the fact that I offer something that they can’t always get on the high street. That’s nice to hear; that I’m able to offer that service.

What do you feel keeps people coming back?
I think it’s the level of personal service that people receive. Across the board, when you go into a shop and ask for something, you’ll be pointed in a general direction. Here, and I think this goes for most of the traders; we give you that extra time. We show you exactly what you’re after and help in any way that we can.

What are you particularly proud of?
That I’ve been here for 26 years (laughs)! In all seriousness, I pride myself in the quality of clothing that I sell. I stock competitive quality. The products I sell aren’t just cheap and cheerful. Quality is important to me, as I want people to come back and I think, from the fact that I’ve been here for so long, you can tell that the quality is here. In my opinion, you only buy rubbish once. I want people to get their money’s worth out of what they buy from me.

How important to you is the ability to meet new people on a daily basis.
Very important, because I hope that the new customers I meet become regular customers. I’d always look to help new customers in the same way that I look after my regulars.

What makes Leicester Market so unique?
Even though we’re all trading here, there is a sense of community that you don’t get in shops. I don’t look upon this as a job, I love it that much. We all look out for each other. If anybody needs to nip off for a bit, we watch each other’s stalls. Even in the case where we may see somebody walking off with something, we look out for each other.

For somebody visiting your stall for the first time, what can people expect?
Definitely the personal service I mentioned earlier. I will look to help in any way that I can. If I don’t have something in stock, I will look to get it in especially and as soon as possible. In the past, I’ve actually delivered products to people’s houses!

Other elements I offer are exactly the same as in shops, which some people don’t expect. If you’re unhappy with products, I provide refunds and exchanges if necessary and each purchase is accompanied by a receipt. I hope it all helps people buy with confidence.

Sita trades Monday through to Saturday from Unit 29.
