Trader Spotlight: FB Gibson & Sons

June 26, 2013

Location: Unit 14 – Indoor Market

Produce: Fish, poultry, game and eggs

Leicester Market’s website visited the ‘son’ side of FB Gibson & Sons, Stuart Gibson (below, far right, alongside mother Sandra and father Fred), to find out more about the incredible range of fish, seafood, poultry and game available on his stall; in addition to his history of trading at Leicester Market…

How long have you been trading at Leicester Market?
We’ve been trading here since the indoor market opened in 1975, so quite a while. In fact, I remember the date; it was November 5th! It started as you see it now, just in a different location in the indoor market. We moved to the current location when it became vacant, as the previous stall was smaller.

What do you think gives Leicester Market its unique characteristic?
Personal service. Here, it’s a one-to-one service; it’s not like in the supermarkets. Some people couldn’t tell somebody what they’re after if they ask. We know what they want and I think that makes Leicester Market unique. We have quality, fresh produce which is delivered daily and then you also get the personal, one-to-one service. We stand and chat to you and we’re happy to listen to what has happened in your day. It’s the same for everybody here at Leicester Market – that’s how we trade.

Even though other traders are ‘competition’, we’re in it together and we help each other out. If somebody runs out of produce, we help each other…we’re a big family. There are four of us in the indoor market that have taken on our father’s businesses. There are some that are newcomers to the market and faces have come and gone over the years. However, we are the original stalls – taking things on from our fathers.

What produce are you particularly proud of?
Most of it, to be honest. We do a lot during game season. We do venison – anything that flies, really. That is definitely one of our specialities and, whilst there is another stall close to us that does the same, we’re the only two traders at Leicester Market that do so. Seasonal stuff like mussels are popular, as is our poultry. We cut it ourselves, we prep it ourselves and – again, I think that is the unique nature of a family business. My dad is still serving people that he served in 1975; it’s that personal connection again that makes things special.

Visit back soon, when we will be featuring an extensive interview with Fred Gibson, who has been trading at Leicester Market since 1975. Fred gives a first-hand account of how the trade and the Market has changed over the years.
