Trader Spotlight – A.J. PittardOctober 14, 2015
Looking for unusual vegetables for a new recipe you want to try? Or do you have an old family favourite which requires some exotic ingredients? Well you’re likely to find it at Leicester Market – but if you can’t, Christine Pittard will try to source it especially for you.
Christine runs the A.J. Pittard fruit and veg stall at the Market – offering a variety of fresh produce, most of it fresh daily and none of it over a week old.
“We go to Birmingham wholesale market to get foreign foods once a week and go to Leicester wholesale market every day we’re trading,” explained Christine.
The Birmingham wholesalers provide a range of foreign items Christine can’t get elsewhere, and she’s proud to provide her customers with the widest range of fresh produce she possibly can.
Discussing how her business has grown over time, Christine said: “I’ve been at the market for over 30 years – my dad had a stall selling mushrooms and tomatoes, that’s all he sold.
“We sell a lot of foreign produce now. If people ask for something we’ll try it.”
Sweet potatoes, yams and plantain are all popular sellers – with other items available depending on the season. If a customer is searching for something specific, Christine will endeavour to get it for them, and if it becomes popular then she’ll start to stock it: “If people ask for something – I get it. We try to move with the times.
“On our stall people can pick what they want, it saves us a job. People can see what they like and pick exactly what they like.”
Christine sets the best prices she can daily depending on what is in season and customers don’t need to buy specific amounts of anything, they can choose what and how much of anything they want.
Christine’s stall (based at B46, B47, B52 and B53) is open four days a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Outdoor Market is home to a wide range of stalls selling fresh produce, and is open Monday to Saturday 7:00am to 6:00pm.
