Pancake race around Leicester Market to raise money for LOROS.

On Shrove Tuesday, Leicester Market hosted a pancake relay race in which participants had to toss pancakes in a frying pan whilst negotiating a course throughout the various buildings and units.

The race took place in 2 heats of 2 teams, with a final between the two winners; the course starting at the market square, stretching across the centre of the market, through the units, the food hall and then finishing back at the square.

Teams were made up of 4 individuals from the Outdoor Traders, Food Hall Traders, Market Staff and local rugby team Leicester Storm.

The winner was able to decide to which charity a donation of £100 from the trader’s association was made to and the winners on the day, the Outdoor Traders,  decided to give the £100 donation to LOROS.

The Food Hall Traders came in second place, whilst Leicester Storm Rugby club and the Market Staff were knocked out in the first heat.

Shaun Miles, Leicester Market Manager said “The event was definitely a success; we had a fantastic turnout, a dramatic race and at the end of the day we were able to help make a contribution to a great local charity in LOROS Hospice.  Thank you to everyone that came down and took part or observed on the day.”

Members of the public were able to sample pancakes with fresh lemon or orange in return for a 50p donation to LOROS, and over 100 were served up courtesy of the trader’s association.

LOROS were also on-hand to provide ushers for the race and to sell raffle tickets on behalf of the hospice house.

Adrian Walker, Senior Fundraiser at LOROS said “Our volunteers and staff were very pleased to be invited to join in the local  festive fun on Leicester Market. The event ticks all the right boxes of being fun to watch and participate in, whilst raising much needed funds to help LOROS patients and their families.

“We are all hoping that this may be the start of an annual event that raises funds for local charities such as LOROS.

“Thank you to Leicester Market and the Traders Association for their support and donations and especially to Adam who cooked over 100 delicious pancakes.”

Judging from the massive queue at the start and the fantastic turnout throughout the day, the event can be seen as a great success which in-turn provided the opportunity to raise valuable money for charity.
