Lineker’s Legacy at Leicester Market

Steeped in heritage, Leicester Market has its fair share of stories to tell from over the years.

But did you know Leicester City and England legend Gary Lineker once manned one of its stalls?

Gary-LinekerThe prolific striker was born in Leicester, and his parents traded fruit and veg at the Outdoor Market.

Footage which emerged from the BBC archives on Football Focus shows Lineker, who was a rising talent at the time, helping patrons in the City Centre with their shopping.

In this footage, Gary describes his time helping his family as hard-work, but says: “It’s a bit special, Leicester Market.” As a youngster, he also used to lend a hand on the stall in his school holidays. Click here to watch the video in full.
