Enjoy Tai Chi at Leicester Market

August 3, 2017

People within Leicester are now able to enjoy the increasingly popular art of Tai Chi for FREE at Leicester Market, in conjunction with the Confucius Institute.

Taking place in Market Square every Tuesday and Saturday morning – weather permitting – between 7.45am and 8.30am, sessions will commence on Tuesday 16 May.

Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise which originated in China. It combines deep breathing and relaxation with flowing movements, and has become recognised around the world as a health-promoting exercise. Studies have shown that Tai Chi reduces stress, improves posture, balance and general mobility, and increases muscle strength in the legs. It’s a low-impact exercise, meaning that it won’t put pressure on your joints or bones and allows people of all ages to take part. It truly is for anyone and everyone.

There’s no need to sign up in advance for the Tai Chi sessions at Leicester Market. Just turn up on the morning for an informal session.

Leicester Market is working alongside the De Montfort University Confucius Institute – a vibrant celebration of Chinese language and culture for all. The institute provides students and the wider community with a taste of Chinese life.

“We are very excited to be able to offer people an opportunity to come down to Market Square and try Tai Chi for free,” said Adam Piotrowski, Development Officer at Leicester Market.

“This is a great way to get out and exercise this summer – in addition to seeing our brand-new square. We are in the process of planning a number of events, activities and markets in this space during the summer and later in the year, so watch this space for updates.”

Mark Charlton, Head of Public Engagement at DMU, added: “We are really pleased that our Confucius Institute can support the Tai Chi activities in Market Square. We are really keen to share Chinese culture with new audiences and we believe this supports the city by adding something unique for people to enjoy.”

FREE Tai Chi sessions take place at Leicester Market Square on Tuesday and Saturday mornings (weather permitting) between 7.45am and 8.30am. We hope to see you there!
