A cyclist from Trowbridge in Wiltshire is marking the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary by riding 800 miles for charity.

Lance Allan (pictured above) is cycling from Somerset to Northumberland, calling in on the 23 towns that were home to the rebel barons who forced King John to accept the Magna Carta.

Leicester – with links to the rebel baron Saer de Quincy – is one of the stops on his route.

Lance cycled into the city centre, accompanied by three cyclists from Ride Leicester, for a media opportunity at Leicester Market at 12.30pm on Wednesday 24 June.

Traders from the market food hall then offered Lance a ploughman’s lunch – including local cheeses and pork pie – with food kindly provided  by Sherwin’s Cheese Company, Country Fayre, and Kotula & Son’s Polish Deli.

About half way there, Lance Allan is visiting all 23 Magna Carta 'Baron Towns'.

Here’s a comment from Lance, who’s also the town clerk of Trowbridge (another Baron town):
“When I discovered that the shortest distance between the Baron Towns is 800 miles, I couldn’t resist the challenge of celebrating the 800th anniversary by cycling the 800 miles to all 23 Baron Towns,” he said.
“Trowbridge Baron Henry de Bohun was granted a market charter for the town in 1200 by King John and so it felt fitting that on arrival in Leicester I enjoyed  lunch at Leicester Market on the 24th July, a Wednesday, and having completed half of my journey from Somerset to Northumberland.”
