Award Winning Food Hall

February 13, 2015

We are pleased to announce that Leicester Market’s newly-opened Food Hall has been awarded the 2014 New Build Award at Leicester Civic Society’s Annual Civic Society Awards.

In what is fast-becoming a very impressive first year for Leicester Market’s newest building, it also attained the recent accolade of Britain’s Best Food Market at 2014’s Great British Market Awards and also placed as a finalist in ProCon Leicestershire’s 2014 Regeneration Project of the Year.

The panel of the Leicester Civic Society were extremely impressed by the building, stating that it was “of uncompromising modern design that is nevertheless in scale and harmony with its important historic surroundings.”

Leicester Civic Society also went on to state that they were “impressed by the clear way in which the building works, by the careful thought that had been given to its function and with the high level of consultation with market traders that has clearly contributed to its success.”

The Food Hall was designed by London-based architects Greig and Stephenson, who specialise in class-leading market design. Previously, they have been commended for their work on Borough Market and Camden Market in London, as well as for those situated in Preston and Leeds.

The setting of the Food Hall is set to be vastly improved again, once the adjoining 1973 building is demolished and a proposed new public square is created.

The Awards presentation led by Councillor Adam Clarke, Heritage Champion for the City of Leicester, are set to be made at 7:30pm on Friday 17 April 2015, a short-walk from the Food Hall at the City Rooms on Hotel Street.
