All things retro will be on offer from 10:00am until 4:00pm at the first-ever ‘Strictly Vintage’ event, in Market Corner.

Twenty traders have booked in to trade on Saturday and will be selling unique vintage clothing, handbags, jewellery, textiles and home furnishings spanning across the decades.

There will also be a variety of refreshments, including homemade cakes and tea served in vintage china.

Visitors can also dip into the future with tarot card and tea-leaf reading.

Joe Harkin, market development manager at Leicester City Council, said:

“We are always looking at adding something different to our events and festivals and I think Strictly Vintage will prove a big hit.

“We are already working on the next fair and looking at adding even more dimensions to it, including a vintage fashion show and putting on some 50s Rockabilly music.”

Lucinda Ottley, who will be selling her range of ladies dresses and retro jewellery at the fair, said she was looking forward to trading on Saturday – the second time she has done so at Leicester Market.

Lucinda, who is travelling across from Birmingham to trade at the fair, added:

“We had a great day’s trading at last year’s vintage and music festival and hope the regular monthly ones are just as busy. Some of my items have a cult following in Birmingham and I am sure the people of Leicester will like them too.”

Starting on Saturday 28th January – it promises to be bigger and better than any vintage market seen before.

Coinciding with the switch-on of Christmas lights within Leicester city centre, Leicester Market’s various stalls were filled with various scents and flavours, as cuisine from around the globe became on offer to the Leicestershire public.

Renowned as one of the key dates of the Leicester Market calendar, the Winter Food Festival was this year joined by a selection of various stalls selling arts and crafts, including jewellery and home-made Christmas decorations.

From Brazilian to Indian; Italian to Spanish, there was something on offer to satisfy anybody’s tastes or curiosity – as trade remained brisk throughout the entire event.

In addition to various food stalls, the regions top chefs and food experts gave audiences a glimpse into various culinary ventures, with Tom Cockerill – of the west end’s Entropy restaurant one of many chefs giving shoppers cooking tips ahead of a season where food is as much a part of life as the frost and snow.

Cuisine from all four corners of the globe was on offer to the constant shoppers, as Leicester Market became a feast for all of the senses.

Oliver, renowned by his moniker of ‘the Naked Chef’, visited Ju-Lee’s Asian Veg stall, stocking up to produce some authentic Indian dishes for his new programme.

Stall owners Julie and Lee Bennett had no idea that they would be joined by one of TV’s most renowned culinary faces, until the half-hour prior to his arrival at Leicester Market.

The chef drew quite the crowd to the market, as customers watched Oliver spend over an hour and a half filming for the new show, which celebrates the wide variety of dishes available in Britain.

The show featuring Leicester Market is to be screened on Tuesday 8^th November at 9:00pm on Channel 4. 

The Moroccan market will stand in Humberstone Gate from Monday 24^th October to Friday 28^th October, and gives shoppers the chance to wander among 40 traditional Berber tents whilst enjoying the sounds of live music from the resident Gnawa band. Shoppers will also be able to sample the flavours of Morocco at a range of stalls selling freshly prepared food.

Among the wide variety of traditional Moroccan handicrafts for sale will be rugs, leather goods, jewellery, ceramics and glasswork including tagines and tea glasses, decorative brass and metalwork and a mouth-watering selection of herbs and spices.

The Moroccan Market of Handicraft will be open from 9:00am until 5:00pm, for five days only.

Councillor Ted Cassidy, Assistant City Mayor responsible for economic development, culture and tourism, said:

“This is a wonderful event for the city centre and shows the draw that Leicester has a market venue. I’m delighted that the Moroccan market is visiting the city as part of its first tour of the UK.”

Traders, shoppers and local retailers will be asked for their opinions on how they would like to see the market developed and improved, focusing on options for the future of the indoor market.

Officers will be asking shoppers for their thoughts in the city centre and the market area during October and will be carrying out separate consultation with current market traders.

An online questionnaire will also be available for people to complete in their own time, and to help collect the views of people who don’t currently shop at Leicester Market.

The consultation will gauge public opinion on a range of possible improvements, including an option to demolish the indoor market and relocate the current meat, fish and cheese traders to a new covered location.

“Leicester Market is at the very heart of the city centre and is vital to its future,” said Soulsby.

“It’s one of the best markets in the country and has been voted the nation’s favourite for two consecutive years.

“Before we move forward with any proposals we want to gather and understand the views and opinions of people in Leicester. We want to know what shoppers value about the market and we need to listen carefully to current traders.

“We also hope to gather the views of people who don’t use the market to better understand what improvements might encourage them to do so in the future.”

People can complete the surveys in person and ask any questions about the consultation at information stalls in Leicester Market on (October 19th, 20th, 25th and 28th), at Highcross shopping centre (October 22nd and 26th) and at the Clocktower (October 18th and 27th). All sessions run from 11:00am to 3:00pm.
