Market Corner

Shoppers in Leicester now have the opportunity to sample the fruits of Leicester Market’s Market Corner.

Food lovers are in for a treat, with the chance to sample the feast of freshly prepared food from a specially chosen selection of the region’s culinary heavyweights that will be standing every Friday and Saturday in the open-air piazza and food court.

From gourmet cupcakes, authentic Indian food and award-winning pies, to hearty hog roasts, fresh coffee and organic cold meats and chutneys, there’s sure to be something to tickle every taste bud. Visitors can make the most of the new open air seating and eating area or buy locally sourced food to take home.

City Mayor, Peter Soulsby, who officially opened Market Corner, said: “Leicester Market has always reflected the vibrancy of our city and this open-air piazza and food court is a fantastic development of the market’s unique character.

“With such a delicious array of local flavours and food talents on offer, I’m sure it will prove to be a huge draw for visitors.”

Nick Rhodes, Leicester Markets Manager, said: “We’re very excited about this new space for the public. There’s been a huge amount of interest in what we’re doing here and I think people will very pleasantly surprised when they experience what has been created.

Joe Harkin, Markets Development Officer, added: “Visitors will be able to soak up the sights, sounds and smells of live, open air cooking from a mouth-watering selection of the some of the best local restaurants and producers. We’ve scoured the region for a really eclectic mix of hot and cold food and I think the mix is a unique one.”

The Market Corner provides more flexibility to the market through the use of 20 temporary, gazebo-style stalls. The new area replaces 37 fixed stalls.

Market Corner is located at the corner of Leicester Market and the historic Corn Exchange Building and the name was chosen following a public vote.

The area has been repaved, with power supplies and fittings for the new flexible stalls. New signage has been put up and the whole area has been given a deep clean ahead of the opening.

Market Corner is a space to sit, eat, shop, relax and enjoy the atmosphere of our vibrant market.

If you love food and “real” shopping, there is sure to be something for you, as we have scoured the region to bring an eclectic mix of the finest quality hot and cold foods.

Soak up the sights, sounds and smells of live cooking from a mouth-watering gathering of the best local restaurants and producers. It will become the heartbeat of our wonderful city.
